Music for Toddlers

The Children's Department of the North Bay Public Library is hosting the fall session of Music for Toddlers, a music program for toddlers (Ages 1 and 2) and their parents/caregivers on Tuesday Mornings at 10 a.m. starting on October 22 through December 3, 2019. This program involves action songs and the use of basic rhythm instruments such as drums and shakers. When: Tuesday mornings Time: 10 - 10:30 a.m. Where: Children's Storyroom Registration is required and will begin on Monday, September 23 at 9:30 a.m., either by phone at 705-474-4830, or in person at the Children’s desk. Registration is limited. Children must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver.

Junior Book Club

The North Bay Public Library Children’s Department will be hosting Junior Book Club with Frontier College on Wednesday evenings starting Tuesday, October 22nd from 6 – 7 p.m. in the Children’s Storyroom. Children ages 6-12 are invited to explore different themes through games, activities and stories with Frontier College tutors. When: Tuesday evenings, October 22 through to December 3, 2019 Time: 6 – 7 p.m. Where: In the Children’s Storyroom The program is free and the fun is guaranteed. Junior Book Club is a great way for kids to learn about diverse subjects of interest in a hands-on way. Each weekly session introduces a new theme for kids and volunteers to explore (anything from volcanos and earthquakes to family pets). Theme pack kits include books (fiction and non-fiction, storybooks, chapter books, graphic novels, and more) and games, crafts, activity or experiment, and a variety of activity sheets. The materials included in each kit are all variations of the same theme, and participants are encouraged to do a bit of reading and writing each week by exploring the themes from their own perspective. Registration is required and will begin on Monday, September 23 at 9:30 a.m., either by phone (705) 474-4830 or in person at the Children’s Desk. Registration is limited.

The North Bay Public Library Children’s Department and Frontier College will be hosting Science Sleuth, a kid-friendly experiment-based program on Thursday evenings starting October 24th from 6 – 7 p.m. in the Children’s Storyroom. Investigate our world and many of the materials in it through a series of kid-friendly experiments. When: Thursday evenings starting October 24th through to November 28th, 2019 Time: 6 - 7 p.m. Where: Children’s Storyroom Every week, participants will be introduced to a different experiment and will follow the scientific process to learn about everything from chemical reactions to different forms of energy and force. Children can test out their own hypotheses and will take the lead in the experiment set up and clean up. No burners, matches or lit flames will be used, though children will handle a variety of materials (everything from white clue to vegetable oil to yeast to food colour) and should be prepared to get a little dirty. This program is suitable for scientists ages 6-12. Registration will begin on Monday, September 23 at 9:30 a.m., either by phone at 705-474-4830, or in person at the Children’s desk.

In this second volume, the authors present many topics including internment, prisoner of war camps in northeastern Ontario, and participating in the Second World War. Through archival research, military documents, newspapers, diaries and personal letters, the stories reveal the sacrifices and challenges, how military activities and service impacted families and communities in northeastern Ontario.
